As I mentioned in my last post, I have some vacation coming up.  I’m very excited for this trip, not only because I get to see my mom for the first time since last summer but also because I’m planning to practice my photography skills.  I used to be an avid amateur photographer but neglected my interest since college until I got my new camera earlier this year.

This reminded me I’ve been wanting to do a post on the importance of pictures and ”data visualization.”  From Alex Lundry in the video below:

Despite the visual nature of text, pictures are actually a superior delivery mechanism for information.  In neurology, this is called the pictorial superiority effect.  And this has been measured.  The more visual an input is, the more likely it is to be recognized and recalled. . . . We should expect to see more visualizations used for messaging purposes.

How does this apply to you?  A few ideas to get your started:

  • Website.  How can you go beyond text?
  • Marketing and branding.  Recognition of logo or style. The importance of consistency across your marketing.
  • Client consultations.  Can you show a diagram instead of just showing numbers or explaining something orally?
  • Productivity.  Can you motivate yourself with diagrams?  Try a mind map instead of a project list?  Graph your sales

Hopefully I’ll get back to more regular posting in June!!
